Saturday, May 5 at 7:30 PM
The Prallsville Mills,
Stockton
Discover 1,000 years of musical
delights from one of the ancient cultures of the world. Music From
China is an extraordinary ensemble that invokes the delicacy and
power of both traditional and contemporary Chinese sights and
sounds—from the "silk strings and bamboo winds" of erhu
(2-string fiddle), pipa (lute), sheng (zither), and dizi
(flute) to the percussive strength of gongs, cymbals, and
woodblocks that summon the spirit of ancient music. Come early and
stroll along the Delaware River at the mill park before hearing
such tunes as "Birds in the Forest" and "A Moonlit
River in Spring."

Discover
the splendors of the Versailles Palace in this evening of Baroque
riches from Louis XIV’s glorious France, featuring music for a
consort of replica and original period instruments (harpsichord,
violin, viola da gamba) by the finest composers of Le Grand
Siècle—Marais, Couperin, and Rameau. By approaching music
authentically, these players interpret with a fresh vitality,
impact, and freedom. Their innovative approach to music in socio-historic

States, Europe, and Asia—has yielded significant revivals of
music previously unknown to modern audiences.

The
Spanish conquistadores discovered the riches of the New
World 500 years ago. Their cultures have been inextricably linked
ever since. Music from Spain and the Americas highlight the final
concert of this year’s festival, as four
internationally-renowned artists—with dozens of critically
acclaimed CDs and decades of world-wide tours amongst them—celebrate
the 100th anniversary of the birth of Joaquín Rodrigo.
Inspired by the vibrant rhythms and mournful soul of Flamenco
Music, the composer’s songs and guitar duets will be heard along
with virtuosic works by de Falla and Sarasate and four centuries
of songs of love and passion.
