De
mar a mar: Music in the Medieval Iberian Peninsula
Saturday,
May 3 at
7:30 PM
Prallsville
Mills, Stockton
With
the Atlantic Ocean in the north and the west and the Mediterranean
Sea in the south, the Iberian Peninsula
finds itself overwhelmingly framed by the sea. This land, which
stands only a few kilometers from
the North African coast, possesses an astonishing history of
cultural exchange between Christians, Muslims,
and Jews. In De mar a mar, the ensemble Sendebar explores the
rich repertoire of 13th- and 14th-century
Medieval Iberian music composed in connection with some of the most
important cultural centers
of the Peninsula. The performance includes Cantigas de Santa
Maria of King Alfonso X “The Learned”
(13th c.), Cantigas d’Amigo of the Galician troubadour
Martin Codax (13th c.), courtly songs of the Catalan
troubadour Berenguer de Palou (12th c.), and spiritual pieces from
the manuscripts known as the Códice
las Huelgas (13th
c.) and the Llibre Vermell of Montserrat (14th c.).

Arnold Steinhardt, violin
Celebrating
Bach's Chaconne
Saturday,
May 10 at
7:30 PM
Old
Greenwich
Presbyterian Church,
Bloomsbury
This extraordinary performance and discussion, by the first violinist of the famed Guarneri String Quartet, will delve into the humble beginnings of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Chaconne as a lusty dance, describe
the mystery that hangs over the work, and discuss its many appearances in Arnold Steinhardt’s recently
published memoir, Violin Dreams. A facsimile of Bach’s strikingly beautiful 1720 autograph of this
remarkable piece of music will be shown, and finally, Bach’s Partita in D
Minor, of which the Chaconne is the final movement, will be performed in
its entirety. Arnold Steinhardt plays a Lorenzo Storioni violin, crafted in the
18th century in Cremona, Italy.

“My heart soared while I read [Steinhardt’s] book. I actually
was moved both to laughter and tears. How can Arnold
Steinhardt play the violin like an angel, and at the same
time be such a hell of a writer? With his bow he gets to the
heart of the Bach Chaconne but with words alone he can
make you hear the subtlest of melodies.”
